Co-Designing the Classroom

Children spend most of their day in school, but rarely influence how those spaces are designed. This project partnered with NYC public school students (ages 10–12) to explore their sense of connection and belonging within their school environment — especially in response to post-pandemic absenteeism.

Through a co-design process, students acted as experts of their own experience, helping to shape design interventions aimed at improving engagement, attendance, and a sense of belonging. The project also advocates for broader use of co-design and cooperative inquiry in physical space design.
